Post 9: Description of my Workplace
I love the vibe of my work place. Everyone here is very nice, supportive and friendly. I like how although this place is an office, it's comfortable here, and we don't really have to dress up all fancy.
The place I work at is pretty big, there are many different departments with in the office. There are many employees here. A few people here sit in legit office, and most of the rest sit in cubicles (like me), I think its cool how people decorate there cubicles with family members, friends and they're interests, I want to do that when I work at a place permentally. I think its cute. There are also many meeting rooms with in this work place, they all have fun names like the green room or the mustard room.
I really enjoy my internship and I'm very sad its coming to an end, I hope that I will be able to continue working here even though I wont be able to visit as frequently as I have been coming.
Post 8: Looking at other people's blogs
Looking at my peers blogs I realized that there were many incomplete ones, which is very understandable because its difficult to manage and maintain this blog. I find it a hassle to do it, I think the prompts are pretty repetitive and I don't find them useful for the project at all, the only reason I do them is so I get a good grade. I think more blogs would be produced and have better quality if it was mandatory during a class like Academic Seminar.
Post 7: How my WLE Project is going:
I worked on creating a proposal to change the schedule for Academic Seminar. Im really excited about my WLE project. My plan is to screen a documentary to all the seniors at Impact and allow a few to participate in a live talk back with the director that will be shown on the ITVS website. My project will be in March because thats when the documentary will be viewed on national television. So it will happen after wle is over, this means that I will need to keep in contact with my mentor because it is important this runs smoothly. This may become challenging because this a huge project and it need to not feel like a huge task for the ITVS team or the director of the film.
I was behind on my hours because it took so long to get this internship but if we can add the hours I received from Woodroe to the hours I have with ITVS, I will be on track. AHHH!
Post 6: Mentor Interview:
My mentor, Steve Goldbloom, is the Marketing and Communications Manager at ITVS. He is in charge of managing a blog and works with film directors to determine what will happen after the film is screened on PBS. He has many responsibilities at his job. He has been working at ITVS for 6 months. Before he worked here he worked for PSB, he likes this job better because it's more relaxed and a more "younger" environment.
Post 5: Hours and Project:
Today I worked with the National Community Engagement Coordinator, Roseli Ilano. I learned a lot about a program ITVS does, its called Community Cinema. This event brings documentaries to 90+ communities in the US. I got to watch my first Independent Lens documentary. I enjoyed it a lot, then for the rest of the day I worked on imputing data and packing the films so they'd be ready to distribute them to each city.
I think I'm behind on hours but I have been staying late, I spent an extra two hours at my internship today. I think I'll be fine.
I have no idea what I'm going to do for my project at my internship. :(
Post 4:
At my internship I deal with the leadership skill, Creative Expression, a lot. Examples of me using this is when I think of ideas to improve their current websites. I need to think about how I could creatively get the audiences attention and spark their interests. Another time I used this skill is when I helped create a short presentation, this involved a quick iMovie. We creatively expressed the message we were trying to send. My internship allows me to become a more powerful communicator. I do this though my voice and projects I create. Impact has taught me to Collaborate Productively and I use this skill during my internship at ITVS. A role of an intern is way more exciting than being a student. I look forward to going to work on Fridays.
First Day At ITVS
I went to my internship to shadow my mentor, Steve Goldbloom and see what I would be doing there as an internship at ITVS. It was interesting.
People that benefit from this company most are documentary viewers and producers. This company helps promote videos on to the station PBS, as well as many cities around the world. In order to run this company successfully, I have found its important to communicate effectively. This company does this well. So far I don't see anything that they need to improve on. I really enjoy being at my new internship.
Intro Post: How I got My WLE/ How I plan to get my WLE: October 26, 2010
I thought that having my internship at the same place I did my previous year would be both easy and fun to go back to. I have planned to go back here since the last day of my internship, last year when they asked if I would return there. I went back to Woodroe Woods a few weeks ago to confirm everything and make sure it be okay for me to return. We set up everything so that I would return there for my internship.
I really enjoy working there and I can see myself having a lot of fun there while also learning a lot. Until last Friday I was very interested in this becoming a future career for myself. I have now found myself very interested in another field, Business Marketing, and i think it would be in my best interest to pursue this during my internship. I am now in the process of changing my internship because I think it will benefit me a lot. My plan is to get in touch with Steve Goldbloom tomorrow and hopefully work something out so that I'd be able to work for his company.
If I get hired as an intern at ITVS I would feel really bad for leaving my current internship so I think that it would be a good idea to volunteer hours to complete the tasks they needed me to do after school on Wednesdays.
POST 1: Job Shadow Day: January 6th
I arrived at my internship at 8AM. I started my day working in 'Building B', this building contained the youngest kids at Woodroe Woods. I've had the pleasure of meeting some of these kids during their summer program but I was still not completely familiar with everyone. Shortly after I got to the classroom we started circle time. This was fun, we sang morning songs and I learned more students names. After circle time I did some projects for the teachers and played some more with the kids. Later, Maria Greshmen, my mentor for the day took me to the office to do some computer work. Maria showed me around the office and showed me where everything I would be using and how to use it. After all that, Maria and I took a lunch break. I stayed in the office for a few more hours to help Maria and answer phones and other odds and ends. One lady called and was interested in putting her child in the school since she was near by I told her to come in to pick up a brochure since Maria was not that busy she offered to give a tour to the woman. I got to follow them and learned a lot about the school and what its like when coming to academics. I enjoyed taking the tour because it made me realize why my parents made the decision to put me in that school. At around 2PM I got picked up.
My Shadow day was great! I learned so much about the way the school is ran. I am looking forward to spending my Wednesday's at Woodroe and help assist the teachers and Directors.
Post 3: Surprise Surpirse:
I went to my internship expecting a normal day, helping out my mentor and other teachers. To my surprise, Nida came to visit me at my internship. She met my mentor, other teachers, and discussed my role as an intern.
From our discussion I learned about procedures and what is excepted of me. My mentor is very helpful, she wants to keep me busy and help me understand what its like to run a small school. Throughout the rest of my internship I would like to learn to be more professional while talking to people other than friends. I will learn this by picking up tips from my mentor while she speaks to other parents. I will practice these skills while on the phone and when parents come in to the office.
So far I love my internship and will continue to work hard and do my best to contribute what I can to this outstanding school.
Post 4: Kerries' Thoughts
Julie continues to work hard at Woodroe. We enjoy having her come help out. We have fun together, we work hard together but its nice to be able to joke around with her, too. It's great that she knows where most everything is around here. Hopefully, Julie will pick up many skills from interning here!
By the end of this internship, i hope that Julie will be able to handle having to deal with many tasks at once because it's an important skill people need in order to be successful. I also hope that she will be able to work the copier better! aha.
I look forward to Wednesday's!
Post 5: Learning to be a Leader
While in my internship I use many Leadership Skills in order to be successful. I mostly use the leadership skill, Communicate Effectively and Persuasively because while working in an office it is important to always be professional while speaking to people especially when answering the phones. This is the most stressful tasks for me because I don't feel confident in speaking without seeing the person. I have worked hard at becoming better at this by practicing possible conversations with my mentor. One time I decided I'd answer the phone saying, "Good morning, it's a wonderful Wednesday at Woodroe Woods School" what a tongue twister! Once the phone rang I got all nervous and blurted out "Good morning, its a Woodroe Wednesday at Woodroe Woods School"! Not realizing my mistake I kept going with the conversation. Once I said it I heard my mentors chuckling I didn't realize why until I hung up. They told me what I said, I was so embarrassed!
Now, I try to avoid answering the phones, but when I have to I remember to answer the phone calmly and speak slower. To avoid the embarrassment.
Post 6: Grading Myself for WLE
I understand all the projects I have worked on during my internship. I feel like I should get a good grade in the Mastery of Knowledge. I also feel the same about my Application of Knowledge grade because I take what I've learned from past experiences to solve problem that occur in my internship. I think that my metacognition grade could improve because I had difficulties completing my blogs, so it made it hard to reflect. I show that I am a leader while at my internship, because I constantly give my input in order to get an outstanding end product for any project. So my Leadership grade should be good. I feel like I'd definately deserve a 4 in College Work Habits because I always come to my internships on-time, prepared, with a positive attitude. I think that I should receive I good grade in Academic Seminar because I work really hard when I'm at my internship and missing a couple of blogs should not bring my grade down. Especially because it wasn't because I was slacking it was because i couldn't get to the site with the blog prompts.
Post 7: Others' Blogs
I read Veronica Solorios', Bianca del Rosarios', Alexis Villalobos', Jaszi Stevens', and George Syrops' Blog!
Post 8: Today Truly was a Wonderful Day at Woodroe Woods.
I had a great time at my WLE this week. I spent most of my time in the Office updating the student roster information. I also got to spend some time with the preschoolers. I really enjoyed that. They were super sweet and a nice break from working on the computer all day.
I just felt really on top of things today, I answered phones with a lot of confidence. My day was just perfect.
WOW! all of blog JUST deleted! Weebly is just great! I'm so gonna get an NC now! AWESOME!

Post: 12 How my WLE going!
Today I worked on editing staff pictures and getting them ordered so that I could create a staff wall for each building in the school. This is not my WLE project but something important that my mentors would like to have.
My project will be a mural. I'm not sure how it will be presented. Right now I'm just focusing creating a proposal of what to draw on the wall. Then once its approved I will make a plan on how it will be presented.
Post: 13 How my WLE going!
I had so much fun at my internship today! I got to work in the Kindergarten classroom for the majority of the day because one of the Kindergarten teachers were not in. So I got the opportunity to fill in with the other Kindergarden teacher. This was different from many of my days spent at my internship because normally I spend my days in the office. It was exciting to see a different part of the school even though I really enjoy working in the office.
I checked into the office to see my mentor a few times through out the day but other than that I rarely interacted with my mentor. During my internship I spent sometime working on my project. I am very excited about my final product even though I am a little bit behind. I am confident this final piece will be a great add to the school.
Working with the Kindergardeners made me realize that it would be really cool to have students participation in my project. So I created a lesson plan for each age group and hope to start that next Wednesday.
In order to complete this project on time I need to come prepared to my internship ready to work. Because my project is very large I decided that instead of rushing through my product I will put in extra hours on weekends or after school.
